How to integrate sustainability into warehouse CSR initiatives
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is becoming ever more important in business. And Warehouse CSR Initiatives contribute to making operations more sustainable in a way that isn’t just good for the environment, but good for your bottom line too.
Warehousing has always been very resource-intensive, but with a little bit of lateral thinking, it’s possible to make a real difference in your environmental impact – while at the same time, increasing your operational efficiency.
Over the years at Socius24, we’ve seen firsthand how small changes in warehouse management have added up to big sustainability wins. We’ve seen this when we’ve worked with customers, and we’ve watched how industries across the whole Supply Chain have evolved. We’ve learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to matching up warehouse operations with CSR goals, so in the interests of helping as many people as possible, we thought we’d share our recommended warehouse CSR initiatives.
1. Start with a sustainability audit
Before embracing a million new and trendy initiatives, Job One is to get a clear picture of where your warehouse stands right now. To tangibly measure improvement, you have to know where you started from and where you’re planning on ending up, which means that an audit will help you uncover key areas for improvement – and possibly help you work out what to address first. Some wins are quicker and bigger than others.
Top tip: look at energy use, waste management, and resource efficiency.
You might find that simple fixes, like adjusting lighting schedules or streamlining your inventory management, can make a significant overall impact. But the end goal of the audit is to identify some measurable benchmarks so that you can accurately track your progress.
2. Make energy efficiency a priority
Energy use in warehouses can be a huge drain, and in fact, it can be one of the biggest factors that affects your Net Zero rating – but it’s also an area that offers quick wins. You can switch to LED lighting, and/or install motion sensors, and using smart energy systems can help cut costs and reduce your carbon footprint.
We’ve seen businesses that have transformed their energy usage by installing solar panels and tapping into renewable energy sources. This kind of action is a win-win, because changes like these can help the planet while also delivering measurable savings over time.
3. Reduce, reuse and recycle more
A lot of waste in warehouses comes from packaging and overstock. Which means that setting up clear recycling protocols, reusing and recycling materials, while at the same time, reducing single-use items – can make a huge difference. Doing this is another one of those disproportionately big/quick warehouse CSR initiatives.
We find that our customers are able to start to take a ‘less is more’ approach, especially when…
